About Us

Just Decarbonize is an independent platform focused on one of the most complex challenges of the energy transition: the decarbonization of hard-to-abate sectors.

Industries such as steel, cement, aviation, shipping, and heavy manufacturing are central to the global economy, yet among the most difficult to decarbonize.

This platform explores the gap between climate ambition and real-world implementation.

What We Cover

Just Decarbonize provides research-driven insights on industrial decarbonization and the broader energy transition, focusing on:

  • Sector-specific decarbonization pathways
  • Climate and energy policy developments
  • Emerging technologies such as hydrogen and carbon capture
  • Economics and financing of the transition

A Cross-Regional Perspective

The energy transition is global, but pathways differ across regions.

While much of the policy direction is shaped in Europe, future emissions and industrial growth challenges are concentrated in emerging economies.

Just Decarbonize connects these perspectives, with a focus on Europe and the Global South.

Our mission is to be a trusted source of thought leadership and actionable analysis — supporting informed dialogue and advancing the collective effort to decarbonize the world’s most vital sectors.

About The Founder

Just Decarbonize is founded and led by Ankush Kumar, a Berlin-based journalist and editor with over a decade of experience covering energy, infrastructure, and climate transitions with a focus on Asia and Europe.

His work spans long-form journalism, policy reporting, and field-based visual storytelling focused on the real-world dynamics of the energy transition.

He has authored a research report on the decarbonization of India’s power sector in collaboration with the Potsdam-based Research Institute for Sustainability (RIS) and is a recipient of the Fetisov Journalism Award for human rights reporting.

His reporting includes field coverage of air pollution in Delhi-NCR, rural electrification in India, and lignite mining operations in Germany’s North Rhine region.

He has also moderated industry discussions, including Google’s “Build What’s Next” event in India.
